Hot Dates Calendar for November 2005

Epilepsy Awareness Month. Actress Neve Campbell recently came out in support of a Bill of Rights for people with epilepsy, which causes various types of seizures in some 2.5 million Americans. www.epilepsyfoundation.org.

Family Stories Month. It’s time to turn off the TV and computer and retell the old family tales about war heroes, bootleggers, babies born out of wedlock and your purported relationship to Charlemagne.

Aviation History Month. Aviation is full of great moments, like Archytas’ building a flying wooden pigeon in 400 B.C., the first flight of the 840- passenger Airbus 380 this April – and the addition of individual LCD entertainment screens on Boeing 777s a few years back. Brush up at www.aviationhistory.org.

National Adoption Month. Established to raise awareness and encourage adoption, especially of children currently in foster care. Approach adoption agencies, attorneys, community groups and children’s advocates about sponsoring events. Check www.adoption.com for information and photo listings of kids who need a family, as well as prospective parents.

2nd Plan Your Epitaph Day. Ties in with the seasonal flurry of death-related holidays, such as Halloween (10/31), All Saints’ Day (11/1), Day of the Dead (11/1 & 2) and All Souls’ Day (11/2).

7th Marie Curie’s Birthday. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867, Marie Sklodowska studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and was the first woman appointed professor there. With Henri Becquerel and her husband Pierre Curie, she won the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics and, on her own, the 1911 Prize for Chemistry.

16th International Day for Tolerance. UNESCO’s Declaration of Principles of Tolerance states, “The practice of tolerance means that one is free to adhere to one’s own convictions and accepts that others adhere to theirs.” www.unesco.org/tolerance/ teneng.htm.

24th Thanksgiving Day. Observed in all states, with the Friday following it also a holiday in most. It’s also the perfect time to thank clients or employees. Think: rewards, holiday cards and business gifts.

Jimi Hendrix’s Birthday. Born in 1942, Jimi Hendrix exploded onto the international music scene in 1967, using feedback and distortion in beautiful, sensational ways that revolutionized guitar-playing. He died at 27 (like all great poets seem to).
